Today, on 22 March, the Estonian Deputy Minister for EU Affairs, Matti Maasikas, introduced the priorities of the Estonian EU Council Presidency to the Bosnian and Herzegovinian Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Mirko Sarović, Deputy Foreign Minister Josip Brkić and Director of the Directorate for European Integration Edin Dilberović in Sarajevo.

Yesterday, during his visit to Albania, the Estonian Deputy Minister for EU Affairs, Matti Maasikas, met with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Albania Odeta Barbullushi, the Minister for European Integration Klajda Gjosha and the leader of the oppositional Democratic Party Lulzim Basha. Maasikas introduced the priorities of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and emphasised that Estonia has always supported and will continue to support EU enlargement.

At today’s cabinet meeting, members of the Estonian Government met with Alexander Italianer, Secretary General of the European Commission, and Martin Selmayr, Head of Cabinet of the President of the European Commission, to discuss cooperation between the European Commission and the Council presidency, the Estonian Government’s upcoming visit to Brussels and Estonia’s priorities during its Council presidency.

Presidency preparations and organisation

The preparations for the Estonian presidency of the Council of the European Union started in 2012. The Action Plan for the Presidency and the central budget for operations were prepared in 2015. The preparations for the presidency are being coordinated by the Government Office.
